My husband is not like other men. I watch him as he sleeps at my side. I smell his man-smell, his dark difference, the earth-scent that binds him to me, but I cannot see him. He forbids lights, words, touch, after we have come together. I want to probe, talk, giggle as I did with my sisters on long nights on the farm. He is tender, gentle, silent. I was so scared before. Mrs. Love warned me before that men are strange creatures, to expect nothing, and then I would be happy. You're a good girl, she told me: you don't ask for what is not there. You have it in you to be happy.
