An early morning fire leveled a large storage barn northwest of East Petersburg today, a firefighting effort hampered a bit by cold rain and icy conditions.

When firefighters arrived around 6:20 a.m., the barn at 1852 Junction Road in East Hempfield Township was "fully involved," said James Rohrer, chief of the East Petersburg Fire Company.

The roughly 45-foot-high structure had formerly served as the main barn of a working farm, but was now used to store equipment.
