LIKE BORDERS-WALDEN and Crown (News, Nov. 21), superstore sales did markedly better than traditional mall stores at Barnes & Noble in the third quarter. Total sales in the quarter rose 22.2% to $359.0 million, with superstore sales ahead 52.5%, to $218.2 million, and mall store sales down 6.5% to $140.8 million.
B & N reported an operating profit in the quarter of $1.3 million, although interest expense resulted in a net loss of $3.3 million. In the third quarter in 1993, B & N had an operating loss of $2 million and a net loss of $5.5 million. Irene...
