BARNES & NOBLE has twice gone out of its way to forestall Borders from opening stores in New York City, according to a report in the Sept. 12 issue of the New York Observer. Asked for comment, Barnes & Noble mall division president Steve Riggio said that the two deals were part of B & N's "aggressive attempt to expand." He added that the company had long-term relationships with some of the key real estate people involved and had as much of a claim to any space as any other potential tenant.
