In 58 B.C., the Roman Gaius Julius Caesar published The Gallic War, thereby establishing a classical paradigm, if not a tradition, in Western literature. Caesar's tripartite geographical division of northern Europe, "The whole of Gaul is divided into three parts...," canonized an artistic and literary form. By defining and reconstructing the landscape into threes, Caesar's imagination changed the perception of space and time.
