I THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN ESSENCE AND EXISTENCE has been taken to be central to Avicenna's metaphysics and ontology of being. Due to the influence that this distinction had on Thomism, and to a lesser extent on Maimonides's work, some Medievalists and Orientalists took Avicenna's distinction between essence and existence to be characterized by essentialism.
