Born in Avery, Maine, 34-year-- old Asa W. Hebberd was farming near Lagrange, Wisconsin, when he enrolled in Co. E, 28th Wisconsin Infantry, on August 15, 1862. Men of the regiment were recruited primarily in Waukesha and Walworth Counties. Hebberd, older than most of the other recruits, was made its first sergeant. The men reported to Camp Washburn, near Milwaukee, in early September. The regiment mustered into United States service on October 13, 1862.
