I DID a lot of acting at Oxford - including Falstaff and Othello - and took plays to the Edinburgh Festival. When I left I became an academic and went to Edinburgh as an assistant lecturer. Within three weeks I knew it wasn't what I wanted to do. I wanted to act. So I spent a couple of years writing a lot of letters. One of them was to Peter Dews who had directed the "Age of Kings" series of Shakespeare plays on television. He said, "We're doing Richard II and I'm going to direct and play John of Gaunt.
