Donald Margulies's Collected Stories is about two women: Ruth Steiner, an author and academic, and Lisa Morrison, Stei-ner's student, then assistant and friend. It's set up as a dialectic between mentor and protege, experience and youth, cynicism and enthusiasm. Then, in a series of scenes that take place in Steiner's New York apartment over the course of six years, Margulies considers the consequences when confidences are betrayed and art plunders life.
