Armoured and mechanized formations were one of the keys, with air power and artillery, to victory in the Second World War. This was particularly true on the Eastern Front. Despite only representing between 8 and 14 per cent1 of the total force, the vast majority of the remainder of the formations were dependant on horses for transport. The large tank fleets,2 and the associated formations, were therefore critical components in both armies.
