Arlington National Cemetery is undergoing its first expansion since 1976, as work began in mid-August to clear a 13-acre tract to make space for about 9,000 new grave sites. Located near the main gate on the site of the old visitor center's parking lot, the $1.4 million project is expected to be completed by Dec. 1 and will bring the capacity of the cemetery to about 264,000. "We expand land a little ahead of when we need it so the land can be developed and settled after the construction," said John C. Metzler Jr., the cemetery's superintendent.
