In Colin Dexter's 1989 novel The Wench is Dead, [1] the principal character is a police detective who becomes interested in a murder case from 1859 Oxford. His interest eventually leads him to inspect the bulky original physical evidence, which has actually been preserved in police storage for nearly 140 years!
