Mhammad Abu-Shawish, the founder of Milwaukee's Arabian Festival, was sentenced Tuesday to three years in prison for misusing $75,000 in federal block grant money. The sentence was at the high end of a range indicated by the federal sentencing guidelines because U.S. District Judge J.P. Stadtmueller determined that Abu-Shawish lied while testifying in his own defense during a trial in June 2005 and that Abu-Shawish likely used the festival as a front to help more than 20 immigrants from Jordan enter the United States illegally between 2000 and 2002.
