Aquinas uses analogy to balance positive and negative theology in his understanding of God-talk. Aquinas's theological epistemology of analogy is based on theological judgment rather than on concept. The meaning of concepts as applied to the divine cannot be known according to Aquinas; thus conceptual agnosticism is joined to judgmental truth. For Aquinas, positive theology, the belief that true judgments about God can be made, takes precedence and provides the foundation for systematic theology, but negative theology, awareness of God's essential hiddenness, provides a corrective dialectic.
