ANIMAL MAGNETISM As soon as they dig themselves out of their sandy nests on the shares of eastern Florida, hatchling loggerhead sea turtles (Coretta caretta) set out on a 9,000-mile journey lasting anywhere from six to twelve years. Migrating in the circular system of currents known as the North Atlantic Gyre, they first head east toward Portugal, then south past northern Africa, and finally west, back to Florida, where they may spend another five to ten years maturing.
