Booze and bed can be a seductive combination, and it is one that has benefited Ware for more than 600 years. Ware was Britain's premier malting town, and the country's most famous bed, the 16th Century Great Bed of Ware, measuring 11ft x 10ft, was built to promote the astonishing number of inns that lined the Hertfordshire town's High Street.

Made by carpenter Jonas Fosbrooke in 1548, it was originally kept at the White Hart Inn in Ware but now resides at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
