A letter by George Meredith to the Duchess of Sutherland in 1907 mentioned his translation of some lines from Virgil. This is the only known instance of Meredith's attempt to translate Virgil, and the poem has been lost. Meredith may have contributed the poem to an anthology called 'Wayfarer's Love: Contributions from Living Poets' assembled by the Duchess to raise money for the Cripples' Guild Society.
