William Dean Howells was interviewed in 1890 for a newspaper, and he indicated his social credo and the conscience of a wise elder. He felt sympathetic to Leo Tolstoy's brand of Christian socialism, and he considered Tolstoy a brave, honest and great man. Howells was writing the short novel 'An Imperative Duty' for Harper's magazine at the time, and he was employed as a literary editor by that magazine. This newspaper interview has gone unnoticed by scholars, and is a valuable social statement by Howells.
