IT'S A RAINY SPRING EVENING and Portland, Oregon's, Barb Pallari wants nothing more than to settle in with a good book. But it's practice night for the Amazon Dragons dragon boat team, so she heads down to the Willamette River. With 20 other lesbians, she paddles a heavy, ornate boat out into the river, fighting currents, whipping winds and pelting rain. Her muscles ache as she focuses on the person in front of her and the team mantra, "one more stroke," echoes in her head. By the end of practice she's exhausted, but exhilarated.
