Influential American choreographer and teacher

Known as the "wizard" of dance, Alwin Nikolais (1910-1993) was a multi-talented multimedia pioneer who, over the course of 55 years, choreographed everything from dance, opera and site-specific pieces to work for film and worldwide television. While he developed a dance technique, his primary influence, says Hunter College Dance Department Director Jana Feinman, was "in pedagogy, in understanding the body in motion."
