MONTERREY, Mexico - A candle at an altar to Mexico's patron saint started a predawn fire yesterday that engulfed a dormitory at a state prison, killing 20 inmates and injuring six, authorities said. Raul Garza, state communications director, said 19 prisoners died of smoke inhalation or burns at the prison. Another died a few hours later at University Hospital in Monterrey, the capital of northern Nuevo Leon state.
