The American Forces Network (AFN) was established during World War II, when US troops in Britain wanted music, entertainment programming, and news from home. Up until that time, the BBC had a monopoly over British airwaves and put up strong resistance to the AFN. They feared that the AFN would cut into the BBC listener base, and it did to an extent. Relations between the AFN and BBC remained strained over censorship and wartime security issues.
