Allegations that a South African diplomat tried to obtain a stolen British surface-to-air missile from a Northern Irish guerrilla organization during a meeting in a Paris hotel room last Friday stirred political storms today in London and Pretoria. The South African government sought to distance itself from the diplomat, who allegedly offered to swap South African arms for the missile.
