ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) -- The most devastating earthquake to hit Algeria in two decades struck east of the capital, killing at least 538 people and injuring more than 4,600, the government said.
Rescuers feared whole families were buried in the rubble as apartment building walls collapsed and falling trees crushed cars in Wednesday's quake. Hospitals were swamped with the injured.
The death toll was at least 538, and 4,637 people were injured, the Interior Ministry was quoted by the official Algerian news agency APS as saying. Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia warned the toll was expected to rise....
