Playwright Edward Albee was born on Mar. 12, 1928 and adopted before he was a month old by Reed and Frances Cotter Albee. Named after his adoptive grandfather, Albee had an unhappy childhood and ran away from home when he was in his late teens. Although his first play, 'The Zoo Story,' got some praise from critics, it was his later plays, including 'A Delicate Balance' and 'Three Tall Women' which catapulted him to the ranks of the US' foremost playwrights.
