Painter left behind cakes and pies for landscapes of steep verticality Wayne Thiebaud made a wildly successful career painting pies and pastries. When written like that, it sounds absurd. But Thiebaud's realist confections were, and have remained, visually sublime -- his lusciously painted meringues and cakes have always looked at least as good as they would taste. Rather less well-known than his desserts, and perhaps with fewer calories but more visual protein, have been his extraordinary landscapes painted from the mid-'60s until the present day, a goodly selection of which are now on view ...
