Adlai E. Stevenson's main influence on the presidential election of Grover Cleveland in 1892 was his ability to bring in the Southern vote. He did so by practicing compromise in a time of strong political divisions in the South. Cleveland believed that the historically Democratic South would vote for him and that he did not need to compromise. Stevenson recognized this near-fatal belief and did what it took to get Cleveland elected. Stevenson's political career and Southern Democrats of the era are discussed.
