Weightlifters should emphasize eccentric contraction in strength training. The concentric phase of the lift should be followed by its eccentric phase, otherwise the weight would drop directly upon the chest. Slow eccentric contractions enable the muscle to enter its prestretch position safely. It also prevents the athlete from dropping the weight. However, eccentric contractions slow recovery period due to muscle soreness.
