Abraham Gottlob Werner is known as the father of modern mineralogy. Born to a wealthy mining and smelting family in Prussian Silesia near Saxony, he began building his own collection at the age of nine. After working for his father's ironworks, he studied mining and metallurgy at the Freiberg Mineral Academy which was established in 1765. In 1775, he became a curator and instructor at the Academy. His collection, which numbered over 10,000 specimens by 1814, is preserved at the Academy.
