Aung San Suu Kyi is the profound leader of Burma's democratic opposition to the military dictatorship that rules today. She was the co-founder of Burma's National League for Democracy (NLD) and won the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize for her nonviolent efforts to restore democracy and human rights in Burma.

Kyi was born on July 19, 1945 in Rangoon, Burma. She is the daughter of Burmese nationalist martyr Aung San, founder of the Anti-Fascist People's Freedom League (AFPFL), which led the struggle for independence.
