Roberto Valero, 34, is a Cuban-born writer and poet who teaches Latin American literature at George Washington University. In April 1980, he was one of nearly 11,000 people who flooded the Peruvian Embassy in Havana hoping to flee Cuba. The month-long occupation at the embassy culminated in the Cuban government's decision to allow the protesters to abandon the country through a sleepy fishing village called Mariel.
