Professor Ephraim Elimelech Urbach, a Jewish scholar and President of the World Union of Jewish Studies, died in 1991. He specialized in Jewish studies, the Talmud and the Midrash, by adopting conventional and modern approaches. He was an orthodox Jew, but he did not allow his personal religious affiliations to interfere with his objective of scholarly analyses. His work 'The Sages' is a comparison of texts from the Talmud and the Midrash. He examined the writings of Church authorities and analyzed portions of the New Testament in the Jewish context.
