The opening punches in the 1993 fiction tourney are soon to start, and the players in the Patterson vs. Patterson bout are warming up. Neither of the heavyweights is named Floyd, but championship hopes are running high.
In one corner is Edgar winner Richard North Patterson, author of Knopfs January page-turner Degree of Guilt ($23). His publisher promises a 250,000-copy first printing of what it trumpets will be "1993's thriller of the year," an obvious contender for the crown once Turow's, now Grisham's.
Meanwhile, in the opposite corner, there waits another Edgar winner, a certain James ...
