Robert Mitchum would have understood. Never a popular figure in Hollywood, he was upstaged even in death by the universally beloved James Stewart. Mitchum died in Santa Barbara at 79, Stewart a day later in Beverly Hills at 89. In World War II, Stewart was a highly decorated officer who flew 20 combat missions. Mitchum was a draftee private who served eight months. Stewart was undoubtedly a kinder, gentler man. Mitchum was antisocial and a bit of a lout, as are many great artists.
