A 3,000-pound, 28-foot canoe hewn out of a single cottonwood trunk floated this week into Atchison, Kan., under the power of five conservation officers from Missouri and Kansas. This bit of theater provided a historic backdrop for the seventh annual Missouri River Natural Resources Conference.
The crew, of course, represented the famous Lewis and Clark expedition that explored the old Missouri and reported on the river's economic potential.
