There used to be scores of them in the Newburyport area, isolated and potholed dirt roads that ended at a salt marsh or perhaps an old hunting cabin. They were places that walkers sought out on fall and winter afternoons, where joggers giving up a run settled for a meandering three-hour walk anywhere where cars aren't. Peace was found on the roads, watching a chipmunk leisurely cross it with no fear of cars, wondering whose tiny cottage stood on a now broken foundation some 50 yards into the woods. Most of the dirt roads have been replaced now, poured asphalt has smoothed their trademark bump...
