Don DeLillo's 1973 novel 'Great Jones Street' uses an economy of structure which allows the reader to morally transcend the mundane world of consumer economics. The main character is a rock musician who abandons his music and withdraws into a spiritual exile in a city apartment. He ceases speaking and attains a state of wordless grace, but he finally returns to public life. The book thus reveals itself as part of the consumer economy which the story has transcended.
