Four years after the Department of Justice filed a motion to force Microsoft to abide by the nation's antitrust laws, the federal government and Microsoft have reached a settlement. Supporters say it will benefit the U.S. economy by removing a cloud over one of our economic mainstays, and that it will unleash innovation in the high- technology marketplace. Nothing could be further from the truth. Oh, the cloud over Microsoft may well have lifted, though the fact that nine state attorneys general have vowed to fight on shows that this long-running case is not over.
