Born in Bronx, New York, in 1929, Chaim Potok grew up in an Orthodox Jewish home and was educated at Orthodox Jewish parochial schools. His Polish immigrant parents were Hasidic Jews, who were not enthusiastic with his childhood talent in the visual arts, a secular talent on which Hasidism did not put a high value. Over a period of time Potok became disenchanted with Hasidism and became interested in Conservative Judaism. In 1954 he became a Conservative rabbi. The following year as a chaplain in the U. S.
