Localized corrosion can weaken metal structures in aircraft, chemical plants, or any number of other places, and it can sneak up on you. Uniform corrosion, such as rust, tends to be forthright. It covers a large surface area and makes its presence known. Localized corrosion is not so easy to spot. Pitting or crevice corrosion, for example, may be hidden under gaskets, between joints, or beneath disbonded coatings. Different types of localized corrosion can work together, too, penetrating deep into the material and causing components to fail prematurely.
