In a strange role reversal between humble and mighty, small booksellers were defiant yesterday in their determination to sell "The Satanic Verses," despite Iranian leader Khomeini's death sentence against British author Salman Rushdie. A storm of criticism on television, newspapers and in the streets, meanwhile, drove two usually imperious national book chains from their earlier positions against the controversial novel.
