In the title essay of this delectable collection of 20 pieces, for example, he proceeds from Wordsworth's robin to Poe's raven, to Whitman's osprey, to Hopkins' kestrel, connecting these into images of birds as mediators between humanity and spirits of the air, "a dance of forms to a perennial spiritual force."
