The morning of Sept. 17, 1862, broke gray and misty in Western Maryland. A drizzling rain had fallen through the night. At dawn, restless federal skirmishers opened fire, and Southern muskets flashed in response. The bloodiest one-day battle of the Civil War was warming up. The Irish Brigade would play a pivotal role.
