National scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. is trying to open the cyberworld to minorities and the disenfranchised. Gates has been around the country on speaking tours touting a multimedia encyclopedia of Africans and people of African descent that he produced with Microsoft's Bill Gates and fellow scholar Kwame Anthony Appiah. Called Encarta Africana, it is a sweeping electronic compilation of African history and its diaspora and impact in the Americas, Asia, Europe and the Caribbean.
