Larry Gelbart's father, Harry, was just 12 years old when he apprenticed as a barber in his native Latvia. He came to the United States six years later, settling first in Chicago (where he met his bride-to-be shortly after he arrived) and subsequently in Los Angeles (where he achieved a modicum of renown as the hair cutter -- this being prestylist days -- to the stars).
