IT'S 60 years since publisher Allen Lane created the mass-market paperback and revolutionised the book trade at a sixpenny stroke. To celebrate its anniversary, next month Penguin Books is publishing 60 small-format books, of around 80 pages each, at a keen 60p. The titles cover the breadth of the Penguin list, from Martin Amis to Virginia Woolf, with Poppy Z Brite, Montaigne and Camille Paglia in between. "We were very keen to avoid making it just the out-of-copyright stuff," says Penguin Editorial Director Tony Lacey. "We think it also represents the range of contemporary literature."
