L. Frank Baum, born May 15, 1856, in Chittenango, worked at a number of jobs, including merchant, actor and chicken farmer.

All through his life, however, he wrote. His first effort was a neighborhood newspaper. He also wrote 40 non-Oz books under seven pseudonyms, and a number of theatrical shows.

There have been many books written in the "Oz" world, especially since the original copyright ran out and characters became public domain. Still, there are 40 books that are considered by Oz fans and scholars to be the true Oz books. They are:
