WHEN the year turned to 2001, it was inevitable that the words 'Space Odyssey' would loom large. Over the New Year holiday, the 1968 Stanley Kubrick film 2001: A Space Odyssey was shown non-stop on satellite TV.

That was, indeed, very appropriate because it was Arthur C. Clarke, who provided the story for the movie, who also came up with the concept of the communications satellite.

Sir Arthur - he was knighted three years ago - is now 83 and resident in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Apparently he regrets only two visionary lapses.
