Earlier this year, I was showing an Australian visitor the main attractions of Washington, and took him, of course, to the Lincoln Memorial. I said that Lincoln was the most universally revered figure in our nation's history, and asked him who would have a comparable stature in Australia. The visitor didn't hesitate: "Phar Lap." Indeed, there do seem to be more monuments in Australia to the legendary racehorse of the 1930s than to any of the country's founders.
