At the end of Gov. William Weld's first negative ad of the US Senate campaign, an announcer urgers viewers to call 1-888-TRUTH-96 to get more dirt on Sen. John Kerry. A more accurate number would be 1-888-SKEWER. If this ad sets the tone of the campaign, voters will be ill-served as they seek to make their decision between two well-qualified and -- except during campaign season -- honorable men. The Weld ad, airing this week, mentions Kerry's "slash and burn" tactics against Jim Rappaport, his opponent in 1990. But Rappaport, who had no public record, was commissioning attack ads of his own. ...
